Why Your Body Moisturiser Deserves a Bigger Budget (What the Science Actually Says)

There’s a moment in most women’s skincare journey where the $8 bottle of lotion starts to feel a little… thin. Not just in texture — in what it’s actually doing for your skin. If you’ve ever stood in the body care aisle wondering whether the $45 jar two shelves up is really worth three times the price, this one’s for you.

As someone who spends my weekdays around science labs, and my weekends coaching women through midlife wellness, I get asked this question a lot: is natural skincare actually better, or is it just clever marketing? So I went back to the research. Here’s what I found.

Your skin isn’t a wrapper. It’s a doorway.

We tend to think of skin as a barrier that keeps things out. It does that — but it also lets things in. The outermost layer, the stratum corneum, is designed to be selectively permeable, and a meaningful proportion of what we apply topically is absorbed into the deeper skin layers and, in some cases, the bloodstream. That’s precisely why topical hormone therapies, nicotine patches, and pain-relief gels work at all — and it’s the same principle that applies to every ingredient in your daily moisturiser.

This isn’t a reason to panic. It’s a reason to get curious about what’s actually in the tub.

What tends to hide in a budget formula

Cheaper mass-market moisturisers often lean on synthetic preservatives and plasticisers to keep costs down and shelf life long — ingredients like parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben and their relatives), phthalates, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. A growing body of research classifies several of these as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) — compounds capable of interfering with hormone signalling, generally through weak oestrogen-mimicking activity, after being absorbed through the skin.

To be clear, the science here isn’t black and white. A number of reviews point out that at the low concentrations used in cosmetics, individual parabens show only weak estrogenic activity compared with the body’s own hormones, and regulators in the US, EU, and Australia currently consider commonly used parabens safe within specified limits. What concerns researchers more is cumulative, everyday exposure — the fact that most of us aren’t using just one product with these ingredients, but a whole routine of them, day after day, for decades. It’s less “one ingredient is dangerous” and more “small exposures add up when repeated daily across a lifetime” — which is exactly why formulation choice matters more the longer you’ve been building a routine.

This is the same logic behind Arbonne’s published ingredient policy, which excludes an entire list of ingredients from every formulation — including parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde-donating preservatives, mineral oil, talc, and synthetic dyes, among others. It’s not a claim that any one product is “toxic.” It’s a formulation philosophy: don’t include what doesn’t need to be there, especially on ingredients your skin absorbs daily.

Why this matters more in midlife than it did at 25

Here’s the part that doesn’t get talked about enough: your skin’s needs change with hormones, not just candles on a cake.

Estrogen plays a direct role in collagen production, ceramide synthesis, and your skin’s ability to hold onto water. A well-known clinical finding is that women lose roughly 30% of their skin’s collagen in the first five years after menopause, with a further, slower decline of around 2% a year after that — and that decline tracks with hormonal timing, not just chronological age. As oestrogen drops, ceramide production (the lipids that seal your skin barrier) also drops, which is a big part of why skin that never used to feel tight or flaky suddenly does in your 40s and 50s.

In plain terms: perimenopausal and menopausal skin is working with a thinner protective barrier and less natural lipid reserve than it used to. That makes what you put on it — and how well it supports that barrier — more consequential, not less.

What “natural” actually needs to prove

Here’s where I want to push back on my own industry a little: “natural” is meaningless as a marketing word unless the ingredients actually do something. So — do they?

For shea butter specifically, yes. Clinical and in-vitro research has repeatedly shown that shea butter’s fatty acid profile (oleic, stearic and linoleic acids) integrates into the skin’s own lipid matrix, reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL — essentially, how fast your skin loses moisture to the air) and increasing hydration; one recent analytical study recorded a 37.8% reduction in TEWL and a 58% increase in skin hydration after 24 hours of use. A broader review of clinical studies on plant oils and butters (including shea, argan, avocado and olive) found consistent semi-occlusive, barrier-supporting effects across multiple formulations, with visible improvements in hydration appearing within 30 minutes of application.

That’s not a vibe. That’s a mechanism.

So is it actually worth the extra money?

Cost-per-use is where the “expensive” argument usually falls apart. A well-formulated moisturiser is generally used in smaller amounts (because it’s more concentrated and absorbs more efficiently) and applied less frequently to get the same result, compared with a thinner, water-heavy budget lotion you might reapply two or three times a day. When you break it down per application rather than per bottle, the price gap narrows considerably — and that’s before you factor in what you’re not accumulating in your skin over the following twenty years.

I’ll say this as both the scientist and the person who actually has to get dressed and out the door each morning: I don’t think every product on your bathroom shelf needs to be the “clean” version. But your everyday body moisturiser — the one going on the largest organ of your body, every single day — is a genuinely reasonable place to spend a little more.
